"Emma's Courtyard"

Newest booklet from Jo Morton, Prairie Hands Patterns

Here's what Jo has to say about this beauty:
"This quilt was designed for my local guild Heritage Needlework Guild, to raffle at their quilt show in September 2004.  When I published the 'Emma's Quilt' pattern in 2003, I always thought the asymmetrical center applique block would be cool in a Four Block quilt.  So I took the opportunity to do another raffle quilt for my guild with this block setting as the starting point.

Since I love scrappy quilts, this quilt was fun to plan.  The background fabrics are partly from my Andover Fabric lines and the rest from my shelves, but all the other colored fabrics are from my lines with Andover Fabrics.  It was great to see how the fabrics from my different lines worked beautifully together.  Since making this quilt my background group called 'Jo's Biscuits and Honey' came out, so you could use all my fabrics to make this quilt.  If you have been collecting my fabrics, this is the quilt for you!

I am planning to make kits of this full size quilt; you may preorder a kit by going to http://libertyquiltshop.com/nli.asp?iid=6997

Retreat at The Barn with Jo Morton

Last weekend we had a great time at The Barn in Valley Falls, Kansas, with our friend, Jo Morton.  Besides teaching a class on her new pattern, "Paws & Reflect," Jo shared her method of machine applique, and treated us to a mini trunk show of some of her favorite quilts.  Everyone is already looking forward to next year's get together.   Almost all of the 30 women have attended all three of the retreats.

A few of Jo's favorite quilts:

This one is a block of the month Jo designed several years ago, "Coventry Stars."    Although we did it in the shop, we will be running it again now that we have Jo's fabrics to use.

Another gorgeous block of the month design is "Anna's Blue Baskets."  We'll be kitting this one up, too, in the near future.

This one is called "Anna's Extras" because they were possible blocks for "Anna's Blue Baskets."  This is in Jo's book "Collecting Baskets."

Also in "Collecting Baskets" is this gorgeous muted design named "Elegant Baskets."

This striking "Love Apple" quilt is on the cover of Jo's "Past & Present."  Years ago, Jo made the red and green log cabin center and when her black thistle fabric came out decided it would be the perfect border, adding the love apple applique.

This is one of my very favorites -- Jo's "Pink and Brown" quilt using that fabulous feather print! It is also in "Past & Present."

Everyone loves this one -- "Wild Goose Chase" on the cover of "Times Past" -- once again using the black thistle fabric!

New Fabrics Here Soon -- Reds, Greens and Golds!  These are popular prints that have been recolored and what great colors to use as basics with Jo's other fabrics.

A Pile of Plaids -- Coming in March will be wovens in colors that will work with all of Jo's print fabrics.  This will give your projects a true scrappy look!

This "Churn Dash" quilt was made by Jo's Little Women Club member, Karan Flanscha from Iowa.  It was finished on December 31, 2004.  It is machine pieced and hand quilted.  Karan used prints from several of Jo's lines, and added some from her own stash, too.  Karan says: "Really enjoyed making this, and it looks great on the back of our new leather loveseat!  I modified Jo's design just a bit by adding the Churn Dash blocks in the 4 corners."

Thanks, Karan, for sharing with us all!

This is where I will share information about Jo Morton, Prairie Hands Patterns -- announcements of new fabrics, books and patterns -- and more.

In September 2004 and we began our online "Jo's Little Women" club.  To date, I have 35 members and growing!  My goal with the club is to assist lovers of reproduction fabric and designs (and particularly Jo's!) in making small quilts that Jo has designed.

Membership runs for 6 months at a time, and cost is $30 for mailing of the pattern each month.  These are designs that will not be published in books, but may be a variation of some of Jo's previous work.  She is, however, creating these projects and writing directions especially for the club.  Jo gives excellent directions and invaluable tips in her directions, so you can feel her presence while you create.

If you have collected Jo's fabrics from previous collections -- "Jo's Calicoes," "Jo's Vintage Collection," or "Jo's Olde Gems" from Andover, you probably have what you need to make these projects.  Piecing and applique is done with small amounts of a large variety.

I have a limited amount left of the newest line, "Jo's Friends and Ladies," and it will be shown in upcoming projects.  It is featured on the webpage now at:

Jo's newest book, "Times Past" is now available.   The cover quilt, "Wild Goose Chase," uses that wonderful black with red thistle fabric that is currently being reprinted, and black prints from "Olde Gems."  Also included are "Blue Birds in the Air" using her small Indigo line, "Tobacco Road," using "Olde Gems," "Autumn Spice," with various black fabrics and golds, and "Nebraska Waves," where Jo mixed in a few of her plaid fabrics in her collection.  You'll also find directions for small projects -- "Think of Me Heart Pillow," "Two Tulips Penny Rug," "Crows in a Row Penny Rug" and a Bird make-do.
Click here to order "Times Past":

In the near future, I will be offering fabric kits of designs in the new book, as well as some of her previous patterns.

Remember, This is just a start of this section, it will grow weekly, but please let me know if you have any questions.

Last Wednesday I attended the "Jo's Little Women" monthly meeting at Harper's Fabric and Quilt Company in Overland Park.  It is a very enthusiastic group, and several had show and tell ready from September's pattern:

Finally for now, here is more information about Jo Morton:
Jo lives in Nebraska City, Nebraska with her husband, Russ, and two cats.  She began quiltmaking in 1980 and hasn't put down a needle since.  Jo has been creating small quilts with the charm of the antique since 1985.   I first met her when she was making and selling her wonderful hand-quilted and framed small quilts to fine folk art shops and antique shows.

As a quilt artist, designer, fabric designer, author, teacher, lecturer and a student of ancestral quiltmaking, she uses color and fine stitchery to give her quilts the feeling of being made in the 19th Century.  These quilts complement furnishings in both the country and contemporary setting.

Her quilts are made with history in mind, presenting recreations of antique quilts, imitating colors and styles of period pieces.  Using an antique quilt's color and/or design as a source of inspiration, she creates an interpretation - a quilt that might have existed in the 19th century.

Jo's work has been listed in Early American Life's Directory of American Traditional Crafts annually from 1990 through 2002.  She stopped submitting to be juried as she has stopped selling her quilts and custom framed quilts.

In 1998 she licensed some of her quilts to Heart of America, who is offering framed art prints of her quilts, available in quilt shops and country stores.

Jo is designing for Andover Fabrics -- her lines to date are "Jo's Calicoes," "Jo's Vintage Collection," "Jo's Olde Gems," "Jo's
Friends & Ladies" and a small group called "Jo's Indigos."

Currently, Jo is a popular speaker and teacher for local guilds and retreats.  She enjoys personally meeting quiltmakers and inspiring their creations.  Her new book from C&T "Small Quilts with Antique Charm" will be released next year, with pictures taken in her home showing display ideas.
